Where Are the Debates in New Mexico This Campaign Cycle?

 Posted:  August 24, 2014

The linked article below from the Santa Fe New Mexican gives the times of now scheduled debates between Susana Martinez and Gary King.

There has been a dearth of information and coverage by New Mexico media of this campaign and small wonder that voters have no information upon which to make their decisions. Most of what we will have going into these debates are hotly worded ads and sniping grenades lobbed from safe bunkers.

The saddest part of this is that we will NOT get a feel for the candidates because it is not a debate. It is just another of the carefully rehearsed photo ops that we get from well coached and well schooled candidates. The candidates will receive the questions in advance and there will be limited time for rebuttal and candidate questioning of each other. All we will see is two candidates reading their prepared lines.

The other sad part is that we have a race for the U.S. Senate between Tom Udall and Allen Weh.

We have been looking for the debate times for these two men but haven’t even been able to determine whether they will even be discussed.

If Tom Udall is avoiding debates we want to know. If Allen Weh is asking for debates and not getting them we want to know. If neither candidate plans on revealing themselves and continue to run a stealth campaign on TV we want to know.

Why isn’t the Albuquerque Journal, that scion of no information, pushing to host a series of Old Town Debates in Albuquerque’s Old Town in front of the San Felipe Church? The public can go and watch a live debate with questions from anyone who shows up, not just handpicked supporters?

We would love to cover an event like that.
