Though this article was written in 2013, it seems to reflect what I have traditionally felt as a native born New Mexican who has lived in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces and Truth or Consequences. New Mexico has elected a good share of politicians from the Republican Party and even had Gary Johnson, a Libertarian kind of guy, as a former Governor. We have a Republican Governor in Susana Martinez and a changing state legislature that increasingly fits our state better than the Democratic lock on the Legislature of sixty years that has not helped us progress.
New Mexico might be a blue state to the big media outfits out East who stand to gain by keeping our own progressive liberal Senator Tom Udall. They pour lots of money into his campaign and work hard to secure his votes for their agendas, instead of New Mexico’s health. A look at Tom Udall’s funding finds he gets most of his money from out of state and has a huge money advantage over his two challengers.
New Mexico, stated here, “is an emerging swing state” and “ranks near the middle of states on the blue side.” It also states the fact that “New Mexico has many Hispanic voters who consider themselves Conservative but regularly vote Democratic. ”
If you run the numbers you see that Conservatives have a 15.5% advantage in New Mexico as of last year. Tom Udall has done nothing to change that.
In fact, it has always been a contention of this Website that Tom Udall does not represent New Mexico. In fact, his victory in 2008 had more to do with an anti -Bush vote than anything he has done.
New Mexico remains a Conservative state. Whether New Mexican’s vote as they believe is a question to be decided on Election Day.
