Who Ya Gonna Believe About Inflation?

Tom Udall has a chicken for every pot and an excuse for every season.

You go to the store at least once a week and maybe more. You load the items in your cart, get to the checkout, watch the little green numbers add up on the digital register, and are always shocked at how much things cost. Yet, you are told that inflation is not here, that things are okay, that all is fine. The big boys at the Federal Reserve and in Washington have it all under control. When they tell you inflation is tame you know they are telling a fib.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics sends out little data checkers once a month to sample the price of items in grocery stores all over the county. The results are tabulated and the BLS comes up with an index that reports on inflation in food items – stuff we eat every day.

In May 2014 the Price Index for meats, poultry, fish and eggs rocketed to a new high. In May of 1967 when this index was created the number was a paltry 38.1. Now, as of January 2014 it is 252.832. In 1980 chickens were $.70 a pound. Now, they are around $1.50 per pound.

When you look at the fact that the size of containers is shrinking, you have another indication that you are getting less for your money. Go buy some fence slats for your new fence and you find they are a quarter inch thinner, weather quicker and warp once they dry out. Look at the ounces in a can of green beans.

This looks like real inflation to us untutored country boys.

Inflation is caused by the Federal Reserves assault on the value of your money. It is also reflecting the cost of labor, transport, shipping/warehousing, merchandizing, taxes, that your local store has to do to sell their product. They raise the price to you whenever their costs go up. That, my friends, is business. Be glad someone takes the risk and endures the headaches to get your food on the shelves or you would be growing and butchering it yourself.

Ask Tom Udall what he has done for business lately. He will tell you a whole pack of bills he has sponsored. What he won’t tell you is that he is a big government man. As long as he gets his tax money from you to spend in your behalf he is content.
